Tuck Pointing

Tuck pointing is a term to describe replacing the old mortar between brick, stone, cinder block and other types of masonry. Some people commonly refer to mortar as grout. We grind out deteriorated mortar joints and mortar joints that broke/lost bond to ¾” deep, sometimes more depending severity of damage. When grinding out mortar joints we use handheld grinder attached to a vacuum to collect dust and debris.

When replacing the mortar joints “tuck pointing”, different types of mortar, sand and mortar coloring are used for desired effectiveness and appearance. Sometimes only spot tuck pointing is required because the deteriorated areas are limited. Different mortar, sand and mortar coloring are used to help match existing mortar joints as close as possible. Spot tuck pointing also helps keep down cost and meet budget. Tuck pointing helps keep building or chimneys in optimal condition, appearance and structurally sound. Overtime, mortar joints will erode, crack and at times lose bond due to the age, settlement, water damage and other related weather factors. After the mortar joints have cured out, we return to clean the mortar joints for a clean look and help blend colors to existing mortar joints “spot tuck pointing”.
